"JAMB Warns Against Illegal Admissions in Nigerian Universities:

Stakeholders Urged to Uphold Educational Standards"JAMB has issued a warning against illegal and underage admissions in tertiary institutions, particularly universities. The Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, emphasized the need to stop admitting underage students, citing it as illegal and calling for accountability.

During a conference of Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State-Owned Universities in Nigeria, Oloyede shared a concerning incident where a 15-year-old student applied for a postgraduate course, prompting questions about the legitimacy of the student's graduation from a particular university.

He stressed the importance of putting an end to illegal admissions, including admitting diploma students without proper authorization. Oloyede urged state-owned universities to address these issues, as they make up a significant portion of the education system.

Former Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, encouraged the pro-chancellors to enhance their institutions' competitiveness and attractiveness to retain top faculty, staff, and students. He emphasized the need for state universities to identify their unique strengths to stand out and build a strong reputation.

Chairman of COPSUN, Sen. Joshua Lidani, highlighted various challenges facing the university system, such as corruption, funding shortages, and governance issues. He acknowledged the role of conferences like this in raising awareness about the threats to education standards and quality.

In conclusion, the conference aimed to address these challenges and provide recommendations for improving governance, standards, and quality in tertiary education. The stakeholders were urged to play a proactive role in advancing the education system in Nigeria.
