Bola Tinubu, a prominent political figure, is set to hold a meeting with leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) today to discuss the new minimum wage issue. This meeting comes as part of the consultation process before sending a bill on the new national minimum wage to the National Assembly.
TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo confirmed the scheduled meeting in a brief message to reporters, indicating that the organized labor unions have been invited for consultations by the President. The purpose of this meeting is to ensure that the concerns and interests of the labor unions are taken into account in drafting the new minimum wage bill.
Addressing the media, Osifo expressed hope for a positive outcome, stating that labor is optimistic about receiving a fair deal that will benefit the most vulnerable members of society. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that the new minimum wage adequately caters to the needs of the poorest of the poor in the country.
The progress on the new national minimum wage had faced delays following the need for consultation with relevant stakeholders, as stated by President Tinubu. Despite the differing views on the proposed minimum wage amount, with the government and the private sector agreeing on N62,000 and labor demanding N250,000, efforts are being made to reach a consensus that will be beneficial to all parties involved.
Osifo highlighted that internal work is being carried out before the bill is submitted for enactment, ensuring that the process is fast-tracked to avoid delays experienced during the 2019 minimum wage negotiations. It is expected that the consultations and discussions between Tinubu and the labor leaders will pave the way for the formal submission of the new minimum wage bill to the National Assembly for consideration and approval.
