ASUU-LASUED Threatens Strike Over Poor Welfare Package and Wage Payment Irregularity
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) chapter, has threatened to embark on strike over poor welfare packages and wage payment irregularities. The union's chairman, Dr. Akolade Lapite, made this known at a news conference in Lagos.
According to Dr. Lapite, the union is demanding the payment of the approved 25-35% salary increase, which is being enjoyed by other institutions. However, the union discovered that the institution's January 2025 salary template showed an increase in workers' salaries, but with a shocking irregularity. Some workers would receive a 5% salary increase, while others would receive 8% and 10%.
The union also stated that its members are owed 72 months of arrears in salary increments. Furthermore, the union is seeking payment of hazard and transport allowances that other tertiary institutions have been receiving since 2013.
Dr. Lapite described the delay in payment as unjust, stating that it has caused low morale among ASUU members. He also mentioned that the union has been mounting pressure for the payment, but to no avail.
A member of the union, Victor Akinola, also spoke at the conference, stating that the university's infrastructure has yet to reflect its university status, despite being upgraded from a college of education three years ago. He mentioned that the university lacks operational vehicles to facilitate teaching and learning, making it difficult for staff members to transport themselves to the university's Epe campus.
The union's threat of a strike has sparked concerns about potential disruptions to academic activities. Students and staff are anxiously waiting for a resolution to the impasse.
