Abdullahi Juli Mansur, a 200-level Computer Science student at Al-Istiqama University, Sumaila, Kano, has been suspended for what the university describes as immoral behavior on campus. The incident occurred when Mansur publicly proposed to a female student, an act deemed inappropriate by the university authorities.
The suspension followed a viral video showing Mansur offering a red bouquet to the female student on campus, attracting cheers from other students.
However, the female student did not accept the bouquet. In response, the university issued a suspension notice to Mansur, citing his actions as contrary to the institution’s principles.
The notice (Ref. no. AUS/REG/54) dated May 14, 2024, signed by Deputy Registrar Sani A. Usman, stated that a disciplinary committee has been established to further investigate the matter.
“This is to intimate you that Abdullahi Juli Mansur, a student of the Department of Computer Science with registration no. AUS/SCC/COM/22/1018, was suspended for displaying improper behavior on campus,” the notice read.
A source close to the university management revealed that Mansur had received previous warnings for similar behavior. The source emphasized the university’s adherence to its faith-based principles, which uphold Islamic and Hausa cultural values. “This is not the first time the boy has been found with that character.
We have two previous cases, and the university particularly invited the student, but he refused to take to caution,” the source said. “And as you know, the university is faith-based, and such manner is against the principle of Islam and Hausa culture.
So that was what actually necessitated the suspension.” The suspension aims to reinforce the university’s commitment to maintaining its values and ensuring that students adhere to the expected code of conduct.
