The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has directed all students to proceed on a three-week mid-semester break with immediate effect following a series of protests on campus.
The decision, approved by the University Senate, comes after students expressed dissatisfaction with the newly introduced transportation system, leading to protests that escalated into disruptive activities. These included blocking major access roads and harassing other road users, causing significant safety concerns for both the university community and the public.
Despite repeated appeals for calm and efforts to engage the students, the unrest persisted, prompting the university to take decisive action to restore order and create a peaceful environment conducive to dialogue.
During the break, which lasts three weeks, the university management will engage with relevant stakeholders to address the issues raised by the students and work towards resolving the situation.
Parents and guardians have been advised to make necessary arrangements for their wards, while students are urged to remain peaceful and use the break responsibly.
