Federal University of Technology Akure has received a major boost as the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria granted accreditation to its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme.
The approval was conveyed during an accreditation visit led by the Council’s Deputy Registrar, Nnameka Nwakanma, who expressed satisfaction with the University’s level of preparedness and adherence to regulatory standards. The Council also approved an admission quota of 100 medical students for the programme.
During the exercise, the MDCN team conducted a comprehensive inspection of facilities across the College of Health Sciences, including departments in Basic Medical Sciences, Basic Clinical Sciences, and Clinical Sciences. Key facilities assessed included laboratories, the medical museum, and the Comprehensive Health Centre, Ijare, as well as the University’s teaching hospital.
The Chief Medical Director of the teaching hospital, Olusegun Ojo, described the accreditation as a landmark achievement, noting that it paves the way for the University to commence its first professional medical examinations.
In her remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Adenike Oladiji, commended the MDCN team and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to maintaining high standards in medical education. She also acknowledged contributions from stakeholders, including the Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, for supporting the development of the programme through infrastructure and facilities.
The MDCN accreditation comes shortly after the National Universities Commission granted full accreditation to the programme, further strengthening FUTA’s position in medical education and training in Nigeria.
